How this SR&ED calculator works
The calculator builds your qualified expenditures from what you enter, then applies the federal credit rates to them. It assumes:
- Overhead is claimed with the proxy method, which adds 55% of the salaries you enter instead of tracking actual overhead costs.
- Only 80% of what you pay arm's-length contractors counts toward qualified expenditures.
- Materials consumed or transformed in SR&ED count in full.
- A Canadian-controlled private corporation earns a 35% refundable credit on up to $6,000,000 of qualified expenditures per year.
- Amounts above that limit, and the expenditures of corporations that are not CCPCs, earn 15%.
- The result is federal only. Most provinces add their own R&D credits, which are not included here.
This is an estimate, not a guarantee. It is not a prediction of what CRA will allow. A real claim depends on which projects and costs are eligible, government and non-government assistance received, your expenditure limit, provincial credits and other rules. Use the number to decide whether a claim is worth exploring, then have the work assessed.
